چکیده

We consider a set of N fluid On–Off flows that share a common server of capacity c and a finite buffer B. The server capacity is allocated using the generalized processor sharing scheduling discipline. Each flow has a minimum service rate guarantee that exceeds its long-term average demand qi. The buffer sharing is unrestricted as long as there is available space. If the buffer is full, the necessary amount of fluid from the most demanding flows is discarded. When On periods are heavy-tailed, we show that the loss rate of a particular flow i is asymptotically equal to the loss rate in a reduced system with capacity c P j61⁄4i qj and buffer B, where this flow is served in isolation. In particular, the system behaves as if it had N times bigger buffer. This new insight on buffer multiplexing gain offers an additional tradeoff in distributing buffers between core and edge switching elements. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Network Multiplexer with Generalized Processor Sharing and Heavy-tailed On-Off Flows

GPS Queues with Heterogeneous Traffic Classes

We consider a queue fed by a mixture of light-tailed and heavytailed traffic. The two traffic classes are served in accordance with the Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) discipline. GPS-based scheduling algorithms, such as Weighted Fair Queueing (WFQ), have emerged as an important mechanism for achieving service differentiation in integrated networks. We derive the asymptotic workload behavio...

ANALYSIS OF FINITE BUFFER RENEWAL INPUT QUEUE WITH BALKING AND MARKOVIAN SERVICE PROCESS

This paper presents the analysis of a renewal input  finite buffer queue wherein the customers can decide either to  join the queue with a probability or balk. The service process is Markovian service process ($MSP$) governed  by an underlying $m$-state Markov chain. Employing the supplementary  variable and imbedded Markov chain techniques,   the steady-state system length distributions at pre...

Coupled Processors with Regularly Varying Service Times

Consider two M=G=1 queues that are coupled in the following way. Whenever both queues are non-empty, each server serves its own queue at unit speed. However, if server 2 has no work in its own queue, then it assists server 1, resulting in an increased service speed r 1 1 in the first queue. This kind of coupling is related to generalized processor sharing. We assume that the service request dis...
